For a good ESAT score, 4.5 and 7.0 are useful reference points: UAT-UK describes 4.5 as typical performance and a score above 7.0 as roughly the top tenth. Neither is an admissions cut-off. Universities receive your module scores separately and consider them alongside the rest of your application.
UAT-UK reports ESAT on a scale from 1.0 to 9.0, to one decimal place, with a separate score for every module you sit. Its official ESAT Explanation of Results for October 2025 and January 2026 says typical candidates score around 4.5 and approximately 10% score above 7.0. The document also shows score distributions by module. Use those alongside the headline figures when interpreting a result.
Last checked: 19 September 2026. University statements below relate to 2027 entry unless a historical cycle is explicitly labelled. No university we checked publishes a minimum ESAT score for 2027.

Applicants to a particular course may score differently from the ESAT cohort as a whole. Being above the overall median does not tell you where you rank among that course's applicants.
How ESAT Is Scored
Each module has 27 equally weighted multiple-choice questions. Every correct answer scores one mark, and nothing is deducted for a wrong answer, so you should answer every question.
After the test, UAT-UK's results page says responses are analysed with a Rasch item response theory model. That process:
- places questions on a common difficulty scale
- measures small differences in difficulty between versions of the test
- removes those differences through equating, so candidates who sat different versions can be compared
- maps the result to the reported 1.0–9.0 scale
For ESAT, each module is equated and scaled separately. January scores are mapped to the same scale as October.
This is why a practice raw mark cannot be converted reliably with a single lookup table. UAT-UK says its specimen and sample tests deliberately give feedback on correct and incorrect answers without awarding a score, because each year's scale depends on the ability of that year's cohort, with the median fixed at 4.5 and the 90th percentile at 7.0.
Is There an Overall ESAT Score?
No. You receive one score per module — for most candidates that means three scores: Mathematics 1 and two others. UAT-UK does not publish an overall or averaged ESAT score, and it does not publish grade boundaries or a pass mark.
That has two practical consequences:
- Your module results are not combined into one number, so a university sees how you did in each module.
- If your course fixes the modules, every one of them is visible to the admissions team, so none is safe to neglect.
How a university weighs the separate module scores against each other is its own decision. None of the university pages we checked publishes a formula.
What Is a Good ESAT Score for 2027?
UAT-UK's scale gives you these reference points:
- Around 4.5: close to the typical candidate.
- Above 4.5: above the typical reference point, but not a general threshold.
- Above 7.0: around the strongest 10% of candidates in that module.
We did not find a fixed 2027 cut-off in the university sources below. If you see one quoted elsewhere, check the course, admissions cycle and original university source before relying on it.
How Universities Use ESAT in 2027
Universities do not share one ESAT policy. Here is what each official source we checked says.
Imperial College London
Imperial's page on understanding your ESAT and TMUA scores says it considers scores alongside the rest of your UCAS application, including your personal statement, when deciding whether to invite you to interview or make an offer. It states plainly that a high score does not necessarily lead to an offer and a low score does not mean your application will be unsuccessful.
Its Aeronautics admissions page for 2027 entry adds that the minimum ESAT score to reach its interview stage "will depend on the overall performance of the cohort of applicants" — in other words, it is not set in advance.
Imperial also publishes an interactive dashboard of 2025-entry ESAT and TMUA data by department, including score distributions and outcomes. Imperial itself warns that this is historic data and should not be taken as indicative of requirements or outcomes for current or future cycles. Use it for context, not as a target.
University of Cambridge
Cambridge requires ESAT for Engineering (Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2 and Physics) and for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Natural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine (Mathematics 1 plus any two modules). Its ESAT page says there is no pass or fail and that you should aim to do the best you can. It does not publish a threshold score.
University of Oxford
Oxford requires ESAT for Biomedical Sciences, Engineering Science and its related engineering courses, Physics, and Physics and Philosophy. The Engineering Science department says tutors use the result alongside your UCAS application and interview to build a well-rounded picture. The Physics department says every Physics and Physics and Philosophy applicant must take ESAT, without exception. We found no published Oxford ESAT threshold for 2027.
UCL
UCL's departmental ESAT guidance confirms Mathematics 1 plus any two further modules for BEng and MEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering. UCL uses the results alongside grades, the personal statement and the UCAS reference, but does not give a numerical weighting on that page. Students progressing from UCL's Engineering Foundation Programme or International Foundation Year (UPC) are exempt from the test requirement.
Who Sees Your ESAT Results?
UAT-UK sends results automatically to the participating universities on your UCAS application, matched course by course. A university sees your score only if the course you applied to uses ESAT. You cannot choose which of those institutions see it.
Add your UCAS Personal ID to your UAT-UK profile before you submit UCAS so the match works.
When Will ESAT 2027 Results Arrive?

Results appear in your UAT-UK account. UAT-UK does not accept appeals of test scores. If something goes wrong on test day, follow the official incident-reporting process straight away rather than waiting for your result.
Can You Resit or Reuse an ESAT Score?
You can sit ESAT only once per admissions cycle, so January is not a second attempt after October. If you reapply in a later year, UAT-UK's FAQ says you must sit the test again in the new cycle; earlier scores are not made available to universities.
How to Set a Practice Target
- Sit each of your modules under timed conditions — 27 questions in 40 minutes.
- Record raw marks per module, plus which questions you skipped or guessed.
- Compare raw accuracy on comparable practice sets to track your own improvement.
- Do not convert practice raw marks into claimed 1.0–9.0 scores.
- Target repeatable weaknesses, especially in Mathematics 1, which every module assumes.
- Keep an unseen set of official material for a final timed run.
