For international students, the hardest IELTS decision is often not how to prepare but which test to book. IELTS Academic, IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Online can look similar while serving different administrative purposes.
This guide was reviewed on 25 August 2026. Requirements change by institution, country and visa route, so treat the receiving university, professional body and immigration authority as the final sources.

Do International University Applicants Take IELTS Academic?
Usually, IELTS Academic is the relevant version for undergraduate or postgraduate study in English. “Usually” is important: a university may accept several tests, waive testing for specified qualifications or countries, require a particular IELTS delivery mode, or set a higher score for one course.
Check the current page for your exact programme and intake. Do not rely on a university-wide summary if the course publishes its own English-language requirement.
Standard IELTS Academic or IELTS for UKVI?
IELTS for UKVI is a Secure English Language Test delivered under UK Visas and Immigration controls. It must be taken in person at an approved UKVI centre.
Not every student travelling to the UK automatically needs IELTS for UKVI. The correct evidence depends on the visa route, sponsor and university process. Before booking:
- Ask the university which test and scores it accepts for admission.
- Check whether your visa route requires a SELT.
- Use the GOV.UK approved-test guidance.
- If the answers appear inconsistent, ask the university's international admissions or visa team in writing.
Booking the more expensive or more secure-looking option “just in case” is not a substitute for confirming the rule.
Can International Students Take IELTS Online?
IELTS Online is a remotely delivered Academic test in selected countries. IELTS says it is suitable for academic purposes but is not currently accepted for migration. Universities decide whether to accept it.
Obtain confirmation from every receiving institution before paying. An institution accepting IELTS Academic from a test centre does not automatically mean it accepts IELTS Online.
The 2026 Move to Computer Testing
IELTS announced that paper-based testing would stop from mid-2026, with exact transition dates varying by market. International applicants should expect Listening, Reading and Writing to be delivered on computer at most centres.
Selected countries may offer Writing on Paper within the computer test. Listening and Reading remain on computer, Speaking remains with an examiner, and the Writing task and scoring do not change. Writing on Paper is not available for IELTS for UKVI.
Check current local availability in the official test-centre finder, not an older country blog or video.
IELTS Test Centres and Travel
IELTS lists thousands of test locations worldwide, but dates, test types and options vary. Search by country and city, then confirm:
- the centre offers the exact test type you need
- the date leaves enough time for results and application processing
- One Skill Retake is available if that flexibility matters
- the address and arrival time are practical
- access arrangements can be approved before the test
If the nearest centre is across a border, check whether your identity document, travel permission and payment method work in that location. The fee and centre rules follow the booked location, not your nationality.
IELTS Fees for International Students
There is no universal international IELTS fee. Prices vary by country, city, test provider, local tax and test type. A price quoted in pounds, rupees or dollars on another country's page may not apply to you.
The booking page for a specific centre is the useful source. Include these possible costs in your plan:
- test fee
- currency-conversion or card charges
- travel and accommodation
- score remark or retake
- rescheduling or cancellation costs under local terms
One Skill Retake prices also vary. Never assume it is half the full-test fee or available at every centre.
ID and Name Matching
Use the identity document required by the centre and enter your name exactly as it appears there. Also check that the name can be matched to university, application and visa records.
Contact the centre before test day if your passport is being renewed, your name has changed, or the booking does not match your ID. Turning up with an unapproved alternative risks being refused entry and losing the fee.
Score Requirements for International Students
Universities often state an overall band plus a minimum for each component. For example, “overall 6.5 with no component below 6.0” is different from simply requiring 6.5.
Requirements can vary by:
- undergraduate or postgraduate level
- department or course
- professional accreditation
- prior education language and country
- pre-sessional English route
- admission versus visa evidence

Results and Application Timing
IELTS publishes a normal window of 1–5 days for IELTS on computer and 6–8 days for IELTS Online. IELTS for UKVI results are normally listed as 1–5 days. These windows do not include every university's processing time.
Build a buffer for:
- an unexpected lower component
- One Skill Retake or a full retake
- an Enquiry on Results
- centre or score-delivery administration
- time-zone differences near application deadlines
Do not book the last plausible test date merely because the normal result window appears to fit.
How Long Will the Score Be Accepted?
IELTS recommends a two-year validity period, although receiving organisations can set a different policy. Work backwards from the point at which the university, regulator or visa authority will check the result, not only from the application opening date.
IELTS Is Separate From Admissions Tests
IELTS demonstrates English-language ability. It does not replace an academic admissions test such as LNAT, TARA, TMUA, UCAT or another course requirement. A strong IELTS score does not compensate for a missing required admissions test, and an admissions-test essay does not certify English proficiency.

- English-language evidence
- admissions tests
- visa or immigration evidence
- scholarship requirements
Before You Pay
