TMUA Scores & University Requirements 2027: What Is a Good Score?

A good TMUA score is one that strengthens your application for a particular course in a particular cycle. There is no universal pass mark and no score that guarantees an offer from Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, LSE, UCL, Durham or Warwick.

UAT-UK reports one overall result from 1.0 to 9.0, to one decimal place. Its official 2025/26 explanation says a typical candidate scores around 4.5 and approximately 10% score above 7.0. Those are the best current reference points for the scale, but they are not university cut-offs.

TMUA Score Scale Explained

This table does not create admissions bands. A 5.0 is above the typical reference point but may be used differently across courses. A 7.0 is a very strong relative result but cannot compensate automatically for missing academic requirements or guarantee selection.

How TMUA Is Scored

TMUA contains 40 equally weighted multiple-choice questions across Paper 1 and Paper 2. Wrong answers do not lose marks, so every question should be attempted.

After the test, UAT-UK analyses responses using a Rasch item response theory model. This process:

1. places questions on a common difficulty scale
2. accounts for small difficulty differences between test forms
3. places candidates on a common ability scale through equating
4. combines Paper 1 and Paper 2 into one reported TMUA result
5. maps that result to the 1.0–9.0 scale

This is why a practice raw mark cannot be converted reliably using a single permanent lookup table. The official Pearson practice tests deliberately report correct and incorrect answers without giving a scaled score.

Did the TMUA Scoring Scale Change?

Yes. The official 2024/25 Explanation of Results states that scaling was revised for 2024/25 and that scores should not be compared directly with earlier TMUA scores.

This matters because search results, forum posts and old university pages may refer to the former scale. Do not conclude that a pre-2024 score of 6.5 has the same standing as a 6.5 from October 2025 or January 2026.

For the current scale, use the official 2025/26 TMUA Explanation of Results: typical performance around 4.5, with about 10% above 7.0.

What Is a Good TMUA Score for 2027?

The most defensible interpretation is:

• Around 4.5: near the typical candidate on the current scale.
• 5.0 or above: above the typical reference point; potentially useful, but not a general threshold.
• 6.0 or above: clearly above typical performance; still assessed within the course's full process.
• 7.0 or above: around the strongest 10% of the cohort by the official scale design.

These are descriptive ranges created from UAT-UK's published scale, not promises from universities. The competitiveness of the applicant group for a particular course may differ from the full TMUA cohort.

TMUA University Requirements for 2027

Universities do not publish one shared “TMUA cut-off.” Requirements can be compulsory, optional, part of an offer or used for shortlisting.

If a university has not published a numerical 2027 threshold, do not treat a tutoring-company estimate or applicant spreadsheet as the university's rule.

Warwick TMUA Score: What Official Data Exists?

Warwick provides unusually useful detail on its official TMUA admissions page, but the statements need their cycle and course labels.

Warwick Mathematics — historical 2025 entry

Warwick says that in the 2025-entry admissions cycle, the majority of Mathematics offers were made to applicants with a TMUA score of 5.0 and above. It also says some offers were made below 5.0 after holistic assessment.

This is historical evidence, not a guaranteed cut-off for 2027. Warwick sets interim thresholds as applications arrive and a final threshold after reviewing the full field.

Warwick Statistics-related courses — current published offer route

For Mathematics and Statistics, MORSE and Data Science courses, Warwick says most offers include an option to meet an additional mathematics-test condition with 5.0 in TMUA or grade 2 in STEP. It also states that applicants who do not take TMUA are not disadvantaged because other routes can satisfy the offer.

That is an offer-condition route for listed courses, not a statement that 5.0 guarantees an offer.

Warwick Computer Science and Economics

Warwick says its exact Computer Science TMUA requirement will be set after results and will not be published. Its Economics use is optional, and the page says requirements are under review for 2027. Contextual exceptions are also subject to current course rules.

The correct conclusion is not “Warwick cut-off = 5.0.” It is “Warwick publishes several different TMUA policies, and 5.0 appears in specifically labelled Mathematics history and Statistics offer routes.”

Oxford TMUA Score for 2027

Oxford replaced the MAT with TMUA for its listed Mathematics and Computer Science courses for 2027 entry. The Oxford Mathematical Institute says the score will help shortlist approximately three applicants per place, considered alongside the UCAS application and contextual information.

Oxford does not publish an advance pass mark or guaranteed shortlisting score. Historical MAT scores are not TMUA scores, and old MAT cut-offs should never be presented as 2027 TMUA requirements.

Cambridge, Imperial, LSE and UCL Scores

These institutions confirm which 2027 courses require or recommend TMUA, but do not provide one safe university-wide number that guarantees admission.

• Cambridge: TMUA is required for Computer Science, Economics and Mathematics. Colleges assess it within the wider application.
• Imperial: TMUA applies to designated Computing, Mathematics and Economics, Finance and Data Science courses. Course pages explain selection; there is no single Imperial-wide cut-off.
• LSE: mandatory for BSc Economics and BSc Econometrics and Mathematical Economics, and recommended for several quantitative programmes. A “good score” can make an optional-test application more competitive, but LSE does not define one universal number.
• UCL: requires TMUA for its listed Economics programmes and assesses the score with academic performance and the rest of the application.

Claims such as “UCL needs X” or “Oxford guarantees an interview at Y” need a current official university source. Without one, treat them as speculation.

Can Universities See Both Papers?

Candidates receive one combined TMUA score. UAT-UK states that Paper 1 and Paper 2 are equated and scaled together; it does not report two separate candidate paper scores.

Participating institutions receive the result automatically when the UCAS course requires or optionally uses the test. Matching is course by course. Candidates cannot choose to hide the result from one relevant institution while sharing it with another.

When Will TMUA 2027 Results Arrive?

You access the result through your UAT-UK account. The official results page says test scores cannot be appealed because the scoring process is quality-assured; incidents or special circumstances must be reported through the relevant procedure and timetable rather than raised only after seeing the score.

How to Set a Practice Target

1. Start with an official paper pair under timed conditions.
2. Record the raw number correct and your Paper 1/Paper 2 error types.
3. Use raw accuracy to measure your own improvement on comparable papers.
4. Do not convert every practice mark into a claimed official score.
5. Aim to eliminate repeatable weaknesses, not merely cross an invented cut-off.
6. Preserve an unseen official pair for a final simulation.
