TMUA Exam 2027: Dates, Registration, Fees & Universities

The TMUA exam — the Test of Mathematics for University Admission — is a computer-based admissions test used for selected Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics and related undergraduate courses. It tests how well you apply school mathematics and reason mathematically under time pressure.

This guide covers the October 2026 and January 2027 sittings for university entry in autumn 2027. UAT-UK owns the test and Pearson delivers it at professional test centres. Requirements are course-specific, so use the official UAT-UK 2027 course list and then verify your exact university course page.

UAT-UK publishes separate deadlines for booking, bursaries and access arrangements. Applying for an adjustment or bursary is not the same as booking the test.

These are the current official UAT-UK deadlines. UAT-UK says late bookings cannot be accepted, and recommends applying early because access requests can take up to ten working days and bursary requests up to five.

Which Sitting Should You Take?

• Oxford applicants must take October.
• Most Cambridge applicants must take October. Cambridge mature applicants applying in the January round may use January where their course rules permit it.
• Applicants to Imperial, Durham, LSE, UCL and Warwick can generally choose October or January, but must check the exact course page.
• UAT-UK says there is no admissions advantage to either sitting for universities that accept both.
• You may sit TMUA only once in the cycle, so January is not a resit opportunity.

For candidates testing in China, Hong Kong or Macau, TMUA is available only on 15 or 16 October 2026, or 8 January 2027. The broader windows do not apply in those locations.

Which Universities Use TMUA in 2027?

Seven UK universities use TMUA for selected courses. “Uses TMUA” does not always mean “compulsory for every mathematical course.” The current position includes:

Policies can vary even within one department. For example, Warwick states that its exact Computer Science TMUA requirement will not be published in advance, while its Economics use is optional and under review for 2027. LSE distinguishes mandatory programmes from programmes where a good score may strengthen an application. Do not turn a university-wide statement into a course requirement.

TMUA is also not interchangeable with UAT-UK's other admissions tests. Oxford Economics and Management, for example, uses TARA rather than TMUA. If your choice is not in the official TMUA course list, check the TARA 2027 guide and ESAT requirements before preparing for the wrong test.

What Is the TMUA Exam Format?

TMUA has two back-to-back papers:

• Paper 1: Applications of Mathematical Knowledge assesses your ability to use mathematics in unfamiliar settings.
• Paper 2: Mathematical Reasoning assesses mathematical arguments, elementary logic and proof as well as the mathematical content used in Paper 1.

Each paper contains 20 multiple-choice questions and lasts 75 minutes. All 40 questions carry equal weight. There is no calculator, dictionary or formula booklet, and there is no penalty for an incorrect answer.

The mathematical content is largely drawn from higher-tier GCSE and AS-level mathematics, but international applicants should follow the specification rather than guess equivalence from qualification names. How to Register for TMUA 2027

Registration is a two-system process:

1. Create one account through the official UAT-UK registration page.
2. Enter your full name exactly as it appears on the photo ID you will bring.
3. Make sure personal details match your UCAS application; add your UCAS Personal ID later if you do not have it yet.
4. Before selecting or booking a test, apply through the dashboard for a bursary or access arrangements if needed.
5. Select TMUA to add its test card to your dashboard.
6. Follow the card into Pearson's system, choose an available centre, date and time, and pay the applicable fee.
7. Save the confirmation and read the Candidate Handbook and ID rules.

Do not create a second account if you used UAT-UK previously. Follow the returning-candidate instructions instead. A UCAS application does not book TMUA, and a TMUA booking does not submit UCAS.

TMUA Fees and Bursary

The overseas fee therefore applies to an applicant of any nationality sitting in, for example, India, Singapore, the UAE or the United States. A non-UK card issuer may add conversion or foreign-transaction charges.

UAT-UK offers a full-fee bursary to eligible UK candidates in financial need. You must apply and receive approval before selecting or paying for the test; UAT-UK cannot reimburse a booking afterward. International applicants should not assume the UK bursary is available to them.

TMUA Results and Score Scale

TMUA produces one overall score from 1.0 to 9.0, reported to one decimal place. It is not a percentage, grade or sum of two published paper scores. The papers are equated and scaled together so candidates who receive slightly different test forms can be compared fairly.

There is no official pass mark or universal university cut-off. UAT-UK's scale is designed so a typical candidate scores around 4.5, while approximately 10% score above 7.0. Those reference points describe the cohort; they do not predict an offer.

Essential Rules to Remember

• Take TMUA in the same admissions cycle as your UCAS application; it is not carried forward.
• You may sit only once per cycle.
• Book before the deadline; account creation alone is not a booking.
• Apply for bursaries and access arrangements before selecting the test.
• Bring original, valid photo ID whose name exactly matches the booking.
• Arrive 30 minutes early; UAT-UK warns that entry may be refused more than 15 minutes after the appointment time.
• Report any test incident immediately at the centre and follow the official incident timetable.
• Do not seek or share live test content. Historic papers published by UAT-UK are legitimate; recalled live questions are not.
