Good LNAT preparation is targeted familiarisation, not subject revision. You cannot predict the passages or essay topics, but you can improve the habits the test rewards: close reading, evidence-based reasoning, option elimination, concise argument and calm pacing.
Start with the free material published by the LNAT Consortium. Add third-party questions only after you understand the official style, because unofficial resources can differ in difficulty, wording and scoring.
Official LNAT Practice Tests and Materials
These resources are published or linked by the LNAT Consortium and should be your starting point:
- Official browser-based LNAT sample test — an on-screen simulation of the real interface; it can be repeated.
- Official practice tests page — paper 1, paper 2, a commentary and the marking scheme in PDF or RTF formats.
- Official sample essay questions and answers — prompts plus selected example responses.
- Official hints and tips — Section A reading advice, essay guidance and comments from past candidates.
- Official preparation guide — the Consortium's overview of what preparation can and cannot do.
The LNAT Consortium says candidates do not need paid coaching and does not endorse commercial or free third-party preparation materials. That does not mean extra practice is useless; it means you should treat it as supplementary and judge it against the official format.
Are There LNAT Past Papers?
Searches for LNAT past papers often lead to unofficial question banks. The official site does not publish a new, named paper for every admissions year in the way some school exam boards do. It provides two paper-based practice tests, an online simulation, commentary, a marking scheme and sample essays.
Use the term official practice tests, not “2026 paper” or “2027 paper”, unless the document itself is officially labelled that way. Repeating a sample can help with interface confidence, but the second attempt is not a fresh measure because you may remember answers.
The official site also suggests LSAT material for additional reading-comprehension practice while warning that LSAT passages and calibration differ. It is useful for skill work, not as a score conversion tool.
A Six-Week LNAT Study Plan
This plan assumes about five focused hours per week. If your test is closer, combine adjacent weeks without skipping the baseline or final simulations.
Week 1: Learn the Format and Set a Baseline
- Read the official format and our LNAT syllabus guide.
- Complete one official Section A paper under 95-minute conditions.
- Write one essay in 40 minutes.
- Record more than the score: note why each wrong option attracted you, where you lost time and whether the essay reached a clear conclusion.
Do not exhaust every official question in the first week. The limited official material is most valuable when divided between diagnosis, practice and final rehearsal.
Week 2: Build Close-Reading Accuracy
- Work on passages without a strict total-time target.
- Underline or note the conclusion, supporting reasons, qualifications and contrast words.
- For every answer, identify the exact sentence or logical relationship that supports it.
- Practise distinguishing what the author says from what you personally know.
The goal is to remove unsupported inference. Speed built on loose reading usually creates more errors.
Week 3: Train Reasoning and Elimination
- Group mistakes into categories such as conclusion, assumption, inference, tone and meaning in context.
- Explain why all four or five options are right or wrong, not just why the key is right.
- Look for answers that are almost correct but too broad, too absolute or aimed at a different claim.
- Finish every question because Section A has no negative marking.
Week 4: Improve Section B
Write three timed essays on different official prompts. For each one:
- Define ambiguous terms in the question.
- Choose a clear position.
- Plan two or three distinct reasons.
- State the strongest objection fairly.
- Answer that objection or limit your claim.
- End with a conclusion that follows from the analysis.
Compare your writing with the official samples for clarity and structure, not for identical opinions. Aim for the official ideal of about 500–600 words and stay below the recommended 750-word maximum.
Week 5: Add Timing Pressure
- Complete mixed passage sets at an average of roughly eight minutes each.
- Practise flagging and moving on when a question is consuming disproportionate time.
- Reserve 10–15 minutes at the end of Section A for review.
- Complete a full 135-minute simulation, moving directly from Section A to Section B.
Review the simulation the next day. Immediate review can be distorted by fatigue and memory of what you intended rather than what you actually wrote.
Week 6: Rehearse, Then Taper
- Use the remaining unseen official paper or simulation for a final full test.
- Revisit recurring error types with short drills.
- Write one final essay and edit it against a checklist.
- Confirm the centre, travel, appointment time and identification rules.
- Reduce heavy practice in the final 24–48 hours.
LNAT Section A Preparation Tips
Read for argument, not topic
Ask: What is the writer trying to establish? Which statements are evidence, objections, examples or qualifications? Topic familiarity can tempt you to import outside information, which the official guidance tells you not to do.
Prove answers from the passage
An option that seems sensible in real life can still be wrong. Point to the wording or inference that justifies the answer. If you cannot, keep comparing alternatives.
Review distractors
High-quality multiple-choice questions include options that are nearly right. Label why a distractor fails: reversed relationship, excessive certainty, unsupported scope, wrong speaker or answer to a different question.
Track timing by passage set
Forty-two separate timers create noise. Track each passage and its three or four questions as one unit. Use your practice data to learn which passage styles slow you down.
LNAT Essay Preparation Tips
Choose the question you can argue, not the one you know most about
The exam assesses reasoning and expression. A familiar topic can produce an unfocused information dump; a less familiar question can produce a cleaner argument.
Plan before typing
A five-minute plan can prevent repetition and contradiction. Write a one-sentence answer, two or three reasons, the strongest objection and your response.
Make assumptions visible
The official guidance accepts arguments based on assumptions when you state them. Do not invent statistics. Write “Assume that…” and explain why the conclusion follows under that assumption.
Use direct language
Complex vocabulary is not a substitute for precise reasoning. Prefer short topic sentences, explicit connections and limited examples that do real argumentative work.
Edit the argument, not only spelling
In the final minutes, check whether the conclusion answers the exact prompt, paragraphs support different points, counterarguments are answered and absolute claims are justified.
How to Use Third-Party LNAT Practice Responsibly
Third-party resources can provide fresh questions, performance tracking and feedback, but they are not official. Before using one, check that it follows the current structure: 42 questions, 12 passages, 95 minutes and a 40-minute essay.
Do not treat a provider's predicted score, difficulty label or essay grade as a university decision. Compare trends across several timed attempts and return to official questions whenever unofficial wording feels unlike the real samples.
