LNAT Exam 2027: Dates, Registration, Fees & Universities

The LNAT exam is a computer-based admissions test used by a group of universities to assess applicants to undergraduate law courses. It tests the reading, reasoning and writing skills needed for legal study; it does not test knowledge of law.

This guide covers the 2026–27 LNAT cycle for university entry in autumn 2027. The LNAT Consortium advises applicants to check both its official dates page and the current page for every course they plan to apply to, because universities set their own deadlines and may change requirements.

The fee is determined by the location of the test centre, not your nationality or country of residence. Confirm the current amount on the official payment page before booking.

LNAT Dates and Deadlines for 2027 Entry

Different universities use different cut-off dates. Treat the date for your earliest choice as your personal deadline and book well before it.

Oxford's Foundation Year in Law has a later LNAT deadline of 13 January 2027. This exception does not apply to the standard Oxford law courses.

The LNAT site also lists late-testing dates extending to July 2027, mainly for some international applications. A late UCAS application does not create a right to consideration, and a university may refuse a result taken that late. Contact each university before relying on the late window. Which Universities Use the LNAT in 2027?

The LNAT Consortium currently lists these participating universities:

• University of Bristol
• University of Cambridge
• Durham University
• University of Glasgow
• King's College London
• London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)
• University of Oxford
• SOAS University of London
• University College London (UCL)
• IE University in Spain
• Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS)

Requirements are course-specific. For example, SOAS requires the LNAT for applicants with certain non-standard qualifications, while applicants with standard qualifications may take it optionally. SUSS has its own July-intake test window, and IE University may offer a choice of admissions tests. Never infer a requirement from the university name alone: check the exact programme and entry year.

For 2027 entry, Cambridge requires LNAT for undergraduate Law. Cambridge says applicants must register by 15 September 2026 and sit by 15 October 2026; both sections will be used, and Cambridge will mark the essay centrally. See the official Cambridge LNAT page.

What Is the LNAT Exam Format?

The LNAT lasts 2 hours 15 minutes and has two separately timed sections:

• Section A: 42 multiple-choice questions based on 12 argumentative passages, completed in 95 minutes. You can review answers within Section A, but cannot return after moving to Section B.
• Section B: one essay chosen from three questions, completed in 40 minutes. The official guidance recommends a maximum of 750 words and says 500–600 words is ideal.

Section A is marked automatically and produces your score out of 42. There is one mark for each correct answer and no negative marking. Section B does not contribute to that numerical score. The essay is sent to universities, which decide how to assess and use it.

How to Register for LNAT 2027

LNAT registration and test booking are separate from your UCAS application.

1. Start or obtain the UCAS details needed for the cycle.
2. Create your LNAT account through the official registration page.
3. Enter your name, date of birth and other details exactly as they appear on your identification and university application.
4. Add your UCAS Personal Identifier when available.
5. Select every participating university you intend to apply to so it can retrieve your result.
6. Choose a Pearson VUE test centre, date and time.
7. Pay by an accepted card, e-voucher or approved bursary, as applicable.
8. Save the confirmation and recheck the appointment, centre and ID rules.

You may take the LNAT before or after submitting UCAS, but you must complete both processes by the relevant deadlines. Sitting the test is not a university application.

LNAT Fees, Bursaries and Rescheduling

Payment is charged in pounds sterling. A non-UK card issuer may apply its own conversion rate or foreign-transaction fee. The official payment page also identifies countries where card verification rules mean candidates must arrange an LNAT e-voucher instead; allow extra processing time if that applies.

The LNAT bursary scheme is limited to eligible UK and EU applicants sitting at UK or EU centres. You must apply and receive the bursary before booking. It is not a general international fee waiver.

The current official booking page says you can reschedule without charge up to 48 hours before the scheduled appointment. The separate payment page still describes a cut-off of noon UK time on the second working day before the test. Because those formulations can produce different cut-offs around weekends and bank holidays, use the earlier limit shown in your account or confirmation and reschedule well in advance. Late changes normally require a new paid booking, and payments are not refunded simply because a candidate decides not to sit.

LNAT Results

Your Section A score and Section B essay are made available to the participating universities you selected. Universities see them before you do and use them alongside academic results, the rest of the UCAS application and, where relevant, interviews.

Candidates who test on or before 26 January normally receive their score by email in mid-February. Those testing after 26 January normally receive it in mid-August; the LNAT Consortium does not promise a specific day. There is no universal pass mark, and universities do not all use the two sections in the same way.

Essential Rules to Remember

• Sit the LNAT in the correct admissions cycle; results cannot be carried forward.
• You normally get one attempt per cycle. A second unauthorised sitting can be invalidated.
• Book early. A deadline does not guarantee an appointment will remain available nearby.
• Use acceptable original photo identification in the same name as your booking.
• Request access arrangements before booking by following the official guidance.
• If there is no reasonable test centre in your country, contact the LNAT Administrator and each university rather than assuming an automatic exemption.
